I’ve been in and around 3D scanning for nearly 20 years, and what pulled me in early wasn’t just the workflow value. It was what scanning is.
A new kind of capture. A new kind of record. Not quite an image, not quite video, and definitely not “just data”. A great 3D scan feels like a new way of recording reality.
I still get that feeling when I see new 3D scanned assets, whether it’s the scale of Machu Picchu captured for Paddington 2, Joe Steel (Visual Skies) scanning a long-forgotten ancient Maya tomb for Disney’s Lost Cities in exquisite 3D detail, or seeing scanned sets from Napoleon for the incredible set design work they represent. Those moments make something obvious:
Great scans aren’t disposable production outputs. They’re assets. And I think 2026 is when the industry starts acting like it.
For years, our ability to capture has run ahead of our ability to keep scans usable. We process, deliver, and move on. Then later, the set is gone, the prop is in storage, and the scan (often incredibly valuable) is hard to find, hard to understand, and expensive to reprocess.
That’s why the shift in 2026 matters.
Not because scanning suddenly becomes possible, it already is.
But because teams are starting to invest in what happens after capture: safeguarding raw inputs, preserving provenance, maintaining chain of custody, and lowering the friction of reuse. Once search, browsing and reprocessing become easy, reuse becomes likely. And once reuse becomes likely, scans stop behaving like a cost and start behaving like assets.
At the same time, AI is changing the shape of the market.
Yes, strong Ai models can now generate convincing 3D from surprisingly little 2D input. That will accelerate the democratisation of 3D creation. But in high-value IP (film, heritage, premium product work), “plausible” often isn’t enough.
What’s emerging is a spectrum:
- AI-generated 3D where speed matters
- High-fidelity scanning where authenticity and control matter
- Hybrid workflows where 3D scanning is easier and requires less data and creates more robust results.
The output quantity will increase and the creative opportunity is huge. The blocker is still friction.
People can already imagine virtual exhibitions of film sets, spatial experiences built from props and costumes, new media built on top of old captures, and even physical manufacture through 3D printing.
But raw data is still scattered, metadata is inconsistent, formats drift, and reprocessing costs stay just high enough that “we should do something with this” rarely becomes “let’s do it.” That’s exactly the gap we’re hell-bent on solving at Volustor.
We’re focused on treating scan libraries as living material, not throwaway deliverables by building features and functions on top of the raw captured inputs. So the same capture can be reprocessed as techniques improve, derived into different outputs without starting from scratch, and reused without specialist heroics every time. And just as importantly, licensing, consent, and provenance can sit inside the workflow, not as a late-stage headache when someone wants to unlock value later.
My bet for 2026:
The winners won’t just be the teams capturing incredible data. They’ll be the teams who can keep that data usable and make reuse practical enough that exploration becomes normal. Because the future of storytelling won’t be flat. It’ll be spatial, shared, and alive. And the worlds we scan today are the worlds we’ll step into next.
